GE, in collaboration with Peake Fuel Solutions, has announced the CNG in a Box system, a new fueling system that promises to help speed the adoption of compressed natural gas for vehicles.
This year, CO2 emissions in the energy sector fell to a record low, a shift due in large part to the increasing use of natural gas to replace coal-fired power plants. But natural gas also has the potential to shake-up the transportation sector, where its use in place of conventional gasoline can help lower fueling costs and emissions.
The new ecomagination-qualified CNG in a Box solution does both. Unveiled at the National Association of Convenience Stores 2012 Annual Show, the system can save a vehicle fleet operator up to 40 percent in fuel costs, compared to conventional gasoline.
“Natural gas is produced at a relatively lower cost and is cleaner burning than gasoline or diesel fuel –natural gas vehicles can show an emissions reduction of up to 80 percent compared to gasoline vehicles,” said GE ecomagination Vice President, Mark Vachon.
Easier, Cheaper and Faster Fueling
The CNG In A Box system is an all-in-one fueling solution. The on-site system compresses natural gas from a pipeline into CNG at a traditional gas station or industrial location. Any CNG-powered vehicle, from taxis, buses and small trucks to personal cars, can refill using a dispenser that looks no different from any other gas pump.
The system’s 8 foot by 20 foot container makes it easy to ship and maintain, and its modular and novel design makes installation simple. Wayne, A GE Energy Business, manufactures the fuel dispensers, which feature familiar and secure pay-at-the-pump technologies.
GE Capital is offering competitive rates and flexible payment options to finance the new system. The collaboration with Peake Fuel Solutions begins this fall, when GE will provide more than 250 CNG In A Box systems for natural gas vehicle infrastructure.
“Through ecomagination,” Vachon says, “we’ll continue to deliver to the industry innovative solutions that deliver both great economics and environmental performance and the CNG In A Box system exemplifies this commitment.”
