Jenbacher Coal Mine Gas Engine

Jenbacher coal mine gas engines help dispose of coal mine gas by harnessing it as an energy source — avoiding liberation of methane, which has over 21 times the global warming potential of CO2.

Environmental Benefits

The global installed base of over 160 GE Jenbacher gas engines running on coal mine methane is designed to generate electricity while avoiding the emission of over 10.5 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent per year through methane destruction and displaced grid electricity production; this is equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of more than 5.2 million passenger cars on European roads.

Operating Benefits

One GE Jenbacher J420 gas engine running on coal mine methane is designed to generate approximately 11,000 MWh of electricity per year, which would require over 5,500 tons of coal for generation in an average US coal-fired power plant.
