GE’s Expanders for Power Recovery Systems enable petroleum refineries to recover heat from waste process gas, generating electricity and avoiding CO2 emissions associated with power generation on the grid. GE’s expanders provide customers with high reliability, typically running four to five years without shutdown.

Environmental Benefits
By installing a 15 MW GE Expander for Power Recovery Systems, one crude oil refinery in the US under typical operating conditions can produce about 120,000 MWh of electricity from waste heat each year, or the amount of electricity used by more than 10,000 US households per year. This can avoid more than 70,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions on the US grid per year, equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of approximately 13,800 cars on US roads.
Operating Benefits
By installing a 15 MW GE Expander for Power Recovery Systems, one crude oil refinery in the US under typical operating conditions can produce about 120,000 MWh of electricity from waste heat each year. This would result in approximately $8 million of savings in electricity costs per year at an average industrial electricity rate of $0.07 per kWh.
