C30-ACi (South African) Locomotive

GE’s C30-ACi locomotives are more fuel-efficient and produce lower emissions than typical locomotives operating in South Africa for freight applications. Compared to locomotives currently deployed in the region, GE’s C30-ACi locomotives also have a greater continuous tractive effort and a higher adhesion capability, allowing customers to haul the same amount of freight with fewer locomotives.

Environmental Benefits

GE's C30-ACi is the first locomotive in the South African region to meet UIC2 emissions standards for brake-specific nitrogen oxides (NOx), unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM). Additionally, these locomotives are more fuel-efficient and produce lower CO2 emissions than typical locomotives currently used in South Africa for freight applications. For example, a South African customer currently deploys 2 GE C30-ACi models to haul a load that would require 3 older locomotives, reducing emissions by over 1,400 metric tons of CO2 annually under typical operating conditions, equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of over 280 cars on South African roads.

Operating Benefits

GE's C30-ACi locomotives are more fuel-efficient than other locomotives currently used in South Africa for freight applications. Additionally, the greater hauling ability of the C30-ACi allows a customer who currently uses older locomotives to maintain the same hauling potential with fewer C30-ACi locomotives. For example, a South African customer currently uses 2 GE C30-ACi models to haul a load that would require 3 older locomotives, reducing annual diesel fuel consumption by approximately 550,000 liters under typical operating conditions, a savings of approximately 5,000,000 Rand per year at a fuel price of 9.1 Rand per liter.
